A standing pilot light is a source of ignition for a burner. In most gas stoves you can see the pilot light located
in between the burners on top of the stove top, as seen in diagram below.
Similarly a gas supplied hot water heater has a standing pilot light next to the burner as seen in the diagram below.

Dryers had standing pilots in the past but these days
they use an electrical element to ignite the burner.
